What is Arts on 5?
We work with academics and encourage the development of new plays, exhibitions and ideas in our spaces. We work with students who make a huge impact on Arts on 5, regularly contributing to our theatre and exhibitions programme.
Arts on 5 is the banner heading for the two arts venues located on Square 5 at the University of Essex Colchester Campus: The Lakeside Theatre & Art Exchange gallery.
We also hold the University’s collection of Latin American Art - Europe’s largest - currently on display in the Albert Sloman Library.
On Campus, the Arts are on Square 5. Arts on 5. Easy!

We show the work of internationally renowned artists such as William Kentridge, Fiona Banner and Jake & Dinos Chapman, while also supporting emerging new talent. The gallery plays an important role in the cultural life of both campus and Colchester, drawing a wide local, national, and international audience to its programme of exhibitions and events.

Art Exchange also works closely with students. The MA Gallery Studies & Critical Curating course showcases their examined exhibition here during the Summer Term.
The Art Exchange Events Programme takes its inspiration from the Exhibitions Programme and runs concurrently. Artist’s talks, films, curator’s tours and critical texts offer powerful learning opportunities, give wider context to the Exhibitions and offer the chance to discover more about the arts. We also run an outreach programme of workshops and talks that take place in schools, colleges and community centres.
The vast majority of the Art Exchange Events Programme is free of charge and all events are fully public.
Art Exchange Opening Hours: Monday – Friday 11am – 5pm, Saturday 12am – 4pm.
Admission free. For further information, or e-mail Jessica Kenny, Gallery Director, at jess@essex.ac.uk.
The Lakeside Theatre
The theatre also works closely with the University’s Centre for Theatre Studies and is a prime site for students' engagement with the creation, viewing and critique of contemporary performance.
