What is Arts on 5?
Arts on 5 is the banner heading for the two arts venues located on Square 5 at the University of Essex Colchester Campus: The Lakeside Theatre & Art Exchange gallery.

We also hold the University’s collection of Latin American Art - Europe’s largest - currently on display in the Albert Sloman Library.

On Campus, the Arts are on Square 5. Arts on 5. Easy!

What does Arts on 5 do?
Arts on 5 is run by a small and dedicated team who work closely with both internationally renowned and emerging artists and performers to bring together a thought-provoking and excellent programme of arts events for a fully public audience.

We work with academics and encourage the development of new plays, exhibitions and ideas in our spaces. We work with students who make a huge impact on Arts on 5, regularly contributing to our theatre and exhibitions programme.

Who can come to Arts on 5 events?
All our events are fully public. If you see something you like, come!

Art Exchange
Art Exchange is one of the region’s leading galleries of contemporary visual art. We show the work of internationally renowned artists such as William Kentridge, Fiona Banner and Jake & Dinos Chapman, while also supporting emerging new talent. The gallery plays an important role in the cultural life of both campus and Colchester, drawing a wide local, national, and international audience to its programme of exhibitions and events.

Art Exchange also works closely with students. The MA Gallery Studies & Critical Curating course showcases their examined exhibition here during the Summer Term.

The Art Exchange Events Programme takes its inspiration from the Exhibitions Programme and runs concurrently. Artist’s talks, films, curator’s tours and critical texts offer powerful learning opportunities, give wider context to the Exhibitions and offer the chance to discover more about the arts. We also run an outreach programme of workshops and talks that take place in schools, colleges and community centres.

The vast majority of the Art Exchange Events Programme is free of charge and all events are fully public.

Art Exchange Opening HoursMonday – Friday 11am – 5pm, Saturday 12am – 4pm.

Admission free. For further information, or e-mail Jessica Kenny, Gallery Director, at jess@essex.ac.uk.

The Lakeside Theatre
The Lakeside Theatre presents an international and culturally diverse programme of theatre, dance, live art, music, film screenings and stand up comedy nights, all for a fully public audience.

The theatre also works closely with the University’s Centre for Theatre Studies and is a prime site for students' engagement with the creation, viewing and critique of contemporary performance.

The Lakeside Theatre supports community and education work. Our regular film screenings are run in collaboration with local film promoters Wivenhoe Reel Appeal; we showcase local company productions out of University term-time and the Lakeside Theatre provides a home for The Young Actors Company on Saturday mornings.

The Lakeside Theatre Box Office is run in conjunction with our friends at the Mercury Theatre Colchester who handle our online bookings and provide a Town Centre point of sale for our tickets.
